A Sun Shaped Around a Sapphire

This sun necklace is made in 18k gold and set with a nearly colorless, subtly yellow rosecut sapphire. The proportions of the motif were developed around this particular stone, resulting in a sun slightly smaller than our original large sun necklace.

The design began with the sapphire rather than a predetermined size for the sun. Once the stone was found, its proportions guided the shape around it, allowing the motif and gemstone to feel naturally connected.

The original version leaves the center open. Here, that space holds a rosecut sapphire that appears almost colorless at first, then shows a gentle trace of yellow as the light changes. It adds an occasional glint to the familiar sun without taking over the design. Beginning with the stone gives this version its own scale and a subtly different expression.
