Form in Gold, Light in Sapphire

A transparent 0.78ct rosecut sapphire with a subtle yellow tint is bezel-set on a Water Ring made in 18k gold with a matte finish. The bezel extends the stone’s outline so it may appear slightly larger, while the subdued surface of the gold reveals the band’s gently undulating form.

A polished surface can reflect both light and its surroundings. By softening those reflections, the matte finish allows the changing width and contours of the band to be seen more directly. The gold carries the form of the piece without competing with the sapphire’s transparency.

Light is left to the rosecut stone. Its broad facets produce a calmer reflection than a pattern of small, intense flashes, bringing the pale yellow tint forward as the angle changes. On the hand, the contrast between quiet metal and responsive facets gives the eye two different things to notice: the shape of the ring and the light within its center.
